“a world beneath our feet”
When the world as we knew it came to an abrupt halt one year ago with the first lockdown, time slowed, leaving a space for some to focus more on nature and their own creativity. Nathalie Ryan, was one of those touched by the unexpected grace of spring 2020. A few months later, thanks to a collaboration with édition 1.6.9 with her Satellite Collection, the designer unveiled her magnified vision of a planet Earth whose fragility and preciousness are no longer topics for debate.
Canada, home of majestic, untouched landscapes, is Nathalie Ryan’s country of origin, and which still whispers the quasi-religious precepts of a sovereign nature into the architect’s ears. Many of her projects, designed in perfect graphic and synchronized harmony with their natural environment, bear witness to her continued desire to pay tribute to the fundamental yet fragile balance of our planet, its fauna, flora and seasons.
March 2020, as her world perspective evolved, marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the expert teams of édition 1.6.9 and resulted in the creation of three carpets, each representing an exceptional landscape as seen from the sky. Inspired by stupendous overview effects of NASA images, and summoning her own textiles and weaving experience, the architect drew on the technical savoir-faire, developed over the years through ambitious projects by édition 1.6.9, to translate the majesty and infinite complexity of nature.
The fruit of meticulously detailed work, her three-dimensional compositions, Kamchatka, Sierra and Utah, combine masterfully on textures, gradients and weaving techniques to reproduce, with incredible skill and craftsmanship, the seemingly accidental beauty of natural landscapes which are reimagined with nature’s magnificence brought to life in this collection.
